    This issue focuses on "Digital Architecture: Exploring the Synthesis between Technology, Design, and Materialization," which centers on how digital and technological innovations are redefining architectural processes, from design conception to construction and materialization. This emerging field merges digital tools with traditional architectural methods to enhance the functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability of built spaces. The main topics for this specific issue are as follows:

    1. Generative Design: Use of algorithms to create unique and efficient architectural designs, focusing on the capacity of generative systems to influence the aesthetics and functionality of architecture.
    2. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR): Integration of these technologies into architectural design to improve visualization, design, and spatial experience, examining how they change the perception of spaces.
    3. Digital Fabrication and Robotic Construction: Application of automation and robotics in construction to increase efficiency and precision, as well as to discuss the ethical and sustainable implications.
    4. Data Science and Architecture: Research on how large data analysis and artificial intelligence can optimize architectural design and building functionality.
    5. BIM (Building Information Modeling): Exploration of advancements in BIM for project management in construction, highlighting its impact on collaboration, sustainability, and project efficiency.

    Architecture in the digital and technological space has experienced a close relationship in recent years, driving significant advancements in the way we design, construct, and experience the built environment. This theme aims to explore the interdisciplinary aspects between architecture and digital technologies, and their impact on architectural practice and society as a whole.

    he topics addressed in this call are the following:

    • Digital architectural representation and 3D visualization.
    • Parametric modeling and generative design in architecture.
    • Digital fabrication and advanced construction technologies.

    CRISIS SPACE OR CRISIS OF SPACE?

    Our current era is strongly characterized by crises of significant gravity and urgency. Deep economic and political crises, pandemic wars, and social upheavals all have a direct impact on the wellbeing of people in their own homes as well as on the urban and territorial scales. A small sample of the numerous effects of these events includes changes in human mobility, the food system, labor market accessibility, and access to decent housing.

    The current issues display the urban and architectural context and raise concerns about the sociospatial, aesthetic, and technical approaches to take for defining public and private spaces.

    This issue calls for a reflection on the new or renewed frontiers of (i) the conceptualized, designed, and calculated spaces and buildings that reflect the complexity of contemporary living; (ii) the proposals for the management and planning of territory and cities focused on sustainability and resilience; and, finally, (iii) the cultural scenarios that depict the material and immaterial heritage of our contexts, essential components for bolstering local identity in these times.

  • RISK MANAGEMENT. WHEN WILL IT BE, IF NOT NOW?

    Disasters, both man-made and natural, are constantly threatening territories and contemporary cities. Human settlements of various sizes ranging from rural areas to metropolises, are frequently exposed to both types of danger in Latin American contexts. Pandemics, floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, as well as economic crises, socio-spatial segregation, privatization, and dysfunctional urban growth patterns, do exert a particularly concerning pressure on contemporary cities. Several disciplines today describe a complex scenario of multidimensional urban problems: physical-spatial, socio-cultural, and technological-environmental. This is a call for academic reflection and a critical as well as dialogical contribution to provide new (or renewed) concepts and solutions regarding these concerns.
    This journal welcomes local and international academics to publish their theoretical and practical findings in order to develop a new framework of material and concepts, while it addresses the challenges and risks that we encounter in our coexistence spaces on a daily basis.
    The 21st Issue of Eídos claims for reflection about the complex issue of risk management and opens up for a debate on some of the major open questions on urban and territorial planning, where tools and practices (good or bad) can certainly influence the present and the near future of our settlements; landscape, architecture and construction, highlighting the process of designing as a method that could prevent with awareness, prudence and innovation, the challenges faced today by natural areas as well as heritage, modern and contemporary buildings; and finally, on the public policies, since the world of top-down decisions could amplify, multiply and orient the effects of how we manage our urban and rural assets and resources.

  • TAKING CARE OF THE SPACE, BUILDING AND SOCIETY

    “A deep desire dominates us: we still want to have cities where we can live as Aristotle says not only safe and healthy but also happy” Bruno Taut.   The concept of care related to the cities and built environment we live in, whether urban, rural or architectural ones, has been broadly investigated in different times and disciplines. Nowadays, it is a current topic driven by climate change and the public health events that have become mainstream in recent years. Important political events such as COP26 in Glasgow suggest to urgently act with novel solutions that are no longer linked to a single area of knowledge, but with collective and a systemic approach of interdependence. We need each other to transform human and space conflicts into opportunities for caring our planet. The current human and urban contested environment, where values, convictions and behaviors define a complex panorama, claims for new paradigms of living together.  This issue aims to reflect and create a dialogue on how taking care of the landscape, cities, urban and rural settlements, processes and architectural projects that generate contemporary habitat; but also, to care of each other, of the communities and, therefore, of public health, a fundamental condition that gives meaning to the quality of the built environment.

  • LIVING THE AMAZON

    La actual crisis de habitabilidad amazónica es generada por un pensamiento moderno que opera a través de distinciones, separaciones entre cultura y naturaleza, naturaleza y sociedad, urbano y rural, masculino femenino y, en última instancia, por el dominio del modelo heteropatriarcal capitalista de sociedad. Para afrontar esta crisis, resulta útil, por tanto, reflexionar sobre las prácticas del habitar, sobre la interacción y el conflicto entre múltiples formas de producción espacial, observando configuraciones socio-eco-culturales plurales, cuestionando, como afirma Philippe Descola (1996), la ontología naturalista propia del pensamiento occidental que surge precisamente de la oposición entre naturaleza y cultura.  

    Este número intenta razonar en torno a investigaciones y formas de proyecto y planificación centradas en el reconocimiento de diferencias, en el análisis de las interacciones y conflictos entre diferentes culturas, ecologías socioespaciales y en sus posibles relaciones. El objetivo es identificar discursos, estrategias, objetos espaciales útiles para la definición de formas de proyecto capaces de promover la coexistencia entre diferentes sujetos, ecologías, cuerpos y grupos sociales y sus respectivas prácticas del habitar la Amazonía.  

    The current Amazonian habitability issue is caused by contemporary mentality that acts through divisions, separations between culture and nature, nature and society, urban and rural, masculine and feminine, and, ultimately, the domination of the capitalist heteropatriarchal social model. To address this crisis, it is useful to reflect on living practices, the interaction and conflict between multiple forms of spatial production, observing multiple socio-eco-cultural configurations, and questioning, as Philippe Descola (1996) puts it, Western thought's naturalistic ontology, which arises precisely from the opposition between nature and culture.

    This issue seeks to make sense of research and project and planning approaches that focus on recognizing differences, analyzing interactions and conflicts between different cultures, socio-spatial ecologies, and their probable relationships. The goal is to discover discourses, techniques, and spatial objects that can be used to define project forms that promote coexistence between various subjects, ecologies, bodies, and social groupings, as well as their respective Amazonian practices.

  • El Recinto como operador del proyecto Arquitectónico, Urbano y del Paisaje. Rol y Significado en el contexto actual

    El Recinto es un concepto compartido por sociedades y culturas muy diferentes a lo largo de la historia. Si miramos hacia atrás, hasta el inicio de las civilizaciones, parece posible tejer un fil rouge (hilo rojo) que pasa por el Recinto no solo como elemento de delimitación del espacio, sino también como principio de asentamiento que define sistemas de relaciones inter-escalares: Territorio, Paisaje, Ciudad y Arquitectura. A partir de estas premisas se puede sin duda afirmar que el Recinto constituye un aspecto universal de la arquitectura, temporal, física y conceptualmente.

    Entre interioridad y exterioridad, entre inclusión y exclusión, entre relación y segregación, este número indaga sobre los distintos matices del Recinto, sea como operador del espacio arquitectónico, urbano y paisajístico o como constructor de relaciones socioespaciales, simbólicas y perceptivas.

  • Repensar la ciudad y la arquitectura en el siglo XXI. Escenarios post-catástrofe

    Los procesos de globalización, neoliberalismo y capitalismo han llevado al mundo a una condición límite, sobre todo a la ciudad cosmopolita y contemporánea, contenedora de personas y actividades.
    Lo que se vive, como consecuencia de la pandemia mundial en acto, no produce ni ruinas ni escombros como afirmaba Walter Benjamin, se trata de una potencia aniquilante, tecnológica y primitiva a la vez. Las ciudades se ratifican como un hecho social y espacial al mismo tiempo, en donde la construcción de lo urbano, lo arquitectónico y lo social siguen dinámicas espontaneas (bottom-up) y planificadas (top-down). Surge el gran desafío de tomar decisiones hacia donde ir, repensar la ciudad y la arquitectura de una manera sistémica e integrar la naturaleza para alcanzar un futuro sostenible.

  • Espacios en Transición

    La Revista EIDOS presenta el siguiente número que profundiza el estudio de ciudad en todas sus escalas y recoge el trabajo científico y académico de profesionales que observan la transición desde sus múltiple interpretaciones y posibilidades. La arquitectura se plasma en la transformación de lugares transcendentes, de fragmentos de ciudad en diálogo que redefinen el espacio desde un imaginario colectivo y multiescalar. Estas posturas son discutidas a partir de la conceptualización de lo urbano, con su sistema de relaciones entre lo natural y lo construido, haciendo énfasis en el estrecho vínculo de las dinámicas de uso y apropiación y los atributos de cultura e identidad.

  • Nuevos paradigmas del espacio

    La Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad UTE presenta el siguiente número como respuesta a la Línea de Investigación “Arquitectura, Hábitat y Ciudad”, en el que se recoge el trabajo científico y académico de profesionales comprometidos en expresar las investigaciones bajo el tema “Los nuevos paradigmas del espacio”, y presenta un compendio de artículos sobre este importante tema que relaciona de forma inequívoca la arquitectura y la ciudad, dos términos que transitan unidos por multiplicidad de elementos.

    El tema Habitar al Borde ha sido escogido para este número de la revista EIDOS entendido desde un punto de vista teórico-conceptual, investigativo, de opinión o de experiencias académicas que puedan constituir un marco referencial para la presentación de miradas críticas y propositivas respecto a este tema, en el ámbito físico-espacial, socio-cultural y tecnológico-ambiental. Habitar al Borde quiere enfocar la atención sobre condiciones de transición, donde una re-significación del concepto mismo de borde, como lugar de la evolución, permita desarrollar nuevas perspectivas orientadas hacia las modalidades en las cuales como seres humanos habitamos la tierra.

Es necesario destacar que uno de los temas cada vez más recurrentes en estas páginas es el enfoque interdisciplinario que tienen las investigaciones.

    En esta ocasión traemos a nuestros lectores diez artículos que son fruto de investigaciones desarrolladas en instituciones de Ecuador e Italia y el resumen del libro “Hacer ciudad. Calderón 2040”. Todo el contenido aborda temáticas actuales de carácter urbano que tienen gran importancia para las ciudades que son presentadas por medio de análisis teóricos y/o valiéndose de estudios de caso concretos desarrollados en los últimos meses.

    Esta es la primera vez que la revista EÍDOS contiene artículos específicamente del área de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, lo cual ha significado una gran oportunidad y un desafío para unir los esfuerzos de nuestro equipo y colaboradores en la construcción de este espacio de divulgación científica, que es una plataforma abierta para que investigadores difundan sus trabajos.

    Los trabajos aquí presentados tratan sobre varias temáticas como: sustentabilidad en las ciudades, proponen herramientas de estudio y planeación urbana, analizan dinámicas urbanas de segregación en ciudades como Quito, profundizan en la naturaleza e impactos de los procesos de intervención y reconstrucción después del terremoto de 2016.
