Abstract

The cryptocurrency market has been one of the fastest-growing environments in recent years. This attracted attention and media coverage, but above all, new informational needs on the part of traders, who have always been related to the virtual sphere. Thus, this work offers a study of the news consumption habits regarding cryptocurrencies on social media among Spanish-speaking traders. This area lacks production of knowledge in spanish but has a high potential. A quantitative-qualitative methodology was applied, including a survey addressed to 43 traders and two semi-structured interviews with experts. The findings confirmed that the market is led mainly of men, and it was identified that 88.4% of traders prefer alternative media to traditional media, their favorite social media platform being YouTube, followed by Twitter. On average, they dedicate 30 minutes daily to inform themselves through social media, accessing two to four sources of information to learn about a specific topic. Short videos and web articles are their preferred formats, as they are complementary. Moreover, since financial market news is generated in English, 62.8% consider English-language content are better than Spanish. The main conclusion highlights that this group has specialized informational needs in economic journalism, which include added value to services offered by artificial intelligence or financial analysis platforms, as well as transmedia and multi-format communication.
