Abstract

Bacterial resistance is related to the use, misuse and abuse of antibiotics. It is a global and complex problem, and includes a number of medically important bacterial species that are difficult to control for multiple causes. One of the most important factors contributing to resistance is the empirical prescription of antibiotics. The objective of this research is to determine whether or not the prescribing habits of medical doctors are related to the prevalence and resistance profiles of bacteriae isolated in the community and in the hospital setting. This is a descriptive study in a tertiary regional hospital in the city of Quito.
