Abstract

In recent decades, electronic media have become part of daily life, and the arrival of online social networks has given its members the possibility of relating and forming digital communities that make the formation of social capital possible. An abundant reserve of social capital assumes the production of a dense civil society that is closely related to political participation. Therefore, the objective of this research is to find the influence of Facebook uses on online political participation. The methodology used in this research is quantitative, which sought to measure, through a survey with Likert scale items, the incidence between the variables: the intensity of use of Facebook, online social capital, and online political participation. The object of study is the population of Culiacán, Sinaloa, México, due to its high percentage of internet users in the country and its level of voter turnout. As a result, online political participation showed a relationship with the rest of the variables, even on linear regressions it is shown that it is influenced by the use of Facebook. If social networking sites such as Facebook influence online political participation, by socializing information that may contain public issues between contacts, they represent an opportunity to stimulate political participation in its physical form and thus influence democratic processes.

Evelia de Jesús Izabal de la Garza, Universidad Autónoma de Occidente

Doctora en Estudios Regionales con énfasis en América del Norte por la Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa, Maestra en Administración y Licenciada en Ciencias de la Comunicación por la Universidad de Occidente. Es profesora de tiempo completo de la Universidad Autónoma de Occidente. Miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores y del Sistema Sinaloense de Investigadores y Tecnólogos. Cuenta con reconocimiento como perfil deseable PRODEP. Ha realizado estancias de investigación en la Universidad de Illinois en Estados Unidos, en Poznan University of Technology en Polonia, en la Universidad de Buenos Aires en Argentina y en la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana en México. También ha participado en eventos académicos nacionales e internacionales en Polonia, Chile, El Salvador, Perú, Argentina y Estados Unidos. Tiene en su haber la publicación de un libro, así como diversos artículos en revistas indizadas y capítulos de libros. La línea de investigación que cultiva se enfoca en el estudio de capital social y desarrollo de innovaciones en el contexto del desarrollo local y regional.
